DES MOINES, Iowa (HPD) — Strong sales boosted the Powerball lottery purse Friday to about $1.6 billion, making it the largest lottery jackpot in US history.
The drawing for the Powerball prize, which no one has won in more than three months, will take place on Saturday night. The series of 39 consecutive draws without a winner reflects the slim odds of hitting a jackpot, which are 1 in 292.2 million.
The advertised prize is what the winner would get if they choose to receive an annuity over 29 years. But nearly all of the winners opt to receive the prize in one lump sum, which for Saturday’s drawing would be roughly $782.4 million.
The new bag tops the previous record of $1.586 million raised in 2016 by three people who bought Powerball tickets in California, Florida and Tennessee.
Powerball is available in 45 states, as well as Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
