Netanyahu gov’t prioritizes West Bank settlements

JERUSALEM (HPD) — The incoming hardline government of Benjamin Netanyahu has made settlement expansion in the West Bank one of its top priorities on the eve of taking office.

The Likud party, to which Netanyahu belongs, published on Wednesday the political guidelines of the new government, and the first of them states that it “will promote and develop settlements in all parts of the land of Israel: in the Galilee, the Negev, the Upper Golan Heights and Judea and Samaria”, the Biblical names for the West Bank.

Most of the international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal and an obstacle to peace with the Palestinians.

The new government led by Netanyahu, the most religious and hardline in Israel’s history, is made up of ultra-Orthodox parties, an ultra-nationalist religious faction and his party, Likud. He is scheduled to take office on Thursday.
