Israeli soldiers kill Palestinian who was throwing stones

RAMALLAH, West Bank (HPD) — Israeli forces shot dead a teenager in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said Saturday.

The Ministry indicated that Musab Nofal, 18, was shot in the chest and died in a hospital in the city of Ramallah. Another Palestinian was seriously injured.

The Israeli army claimed that Nofal and the other Palestinian were throwing stones at Israeli vehicles traveling on a West Bank highway near Silwad, northeast of Ramallah, damaging several vehicles. The soldiers returned fire, he added.

The violence is the latest in a wave of clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem that has claimed the lives of more than 130 Palestinians this year, making 2022 the deadliest since the UN began. their death count in 2005.

The incident comes amid a political shift in Israel following national elections, with former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu poised to return to power in a coalition government made up of far-right allies, including extremist lawmaker Itamar Ben-Gvir, who in response to the incidents said that Israel will soon take a tougher approach against the attackers.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, and has maintained a military occupation of the territory ever since, settling more than 500,000 people there. The Palestinians want the territory, along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, for their long-awaited independent state.
