India: 16 soldiers die when their truck falls into a gorge

GUWAHATI, India (HPD) — A truck carrying soldiers skidded down a steep grade into a gorge in remote northeast India on Friday, killing at least 16, the army said.

Four other soldiers were injured in the accident in Chatten, 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim state.

The accident occurred when the vehicle made a sharp turn on a mountain road, the army said in a statement.

The wounded were airlifted to a nearby military hospital.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said he was deeply saddened by the soldiers’ deaths.

Accidents are common on the poorly maintained roads of India. More than 110,000 people die each year in traffic accidents, according to authorities. Most accidents are attributed to reckless driving, rough roads, and aging vehicles.
