BERLIN (HPD) — German authorities have seized 635 kilograms of cocaine hidden among bananas shipped from Ecuador, officials said Monday.
The drug, compressed into blocks and wrapped in plastic film, was found on October 27 in several packages in Duisburg, in western Germany, the customs office in Essen reported.
The packages were hidden among bananas in a container shipped from Ecuador that arrived in Germany via the Dutch port of Vlissingen. Employees of the company where the bananas were delivered noticed the packages and notified customs.
Authorities estimate the street value of the drug to be around $44.3 million, the German news agency dpa reported.
